Following a year of reflection and research in 2022 — CAG’s 50th year of public operations — CAG invited more than fifty artists, cultural workers, activists, and other civic leaders throughout 2023 to reflect on the broader social and cultural histories that have shaped both this city and the gallery’s work over the past five decades. 

Encompassing responses in audio, video and text, the resulting responses are gathered at [timelines.cagvancouver.org](https://timelines.cagvancouver.org/). Mapping some of the key moments, movements, art, and actors that have impacted the history, development and future of Vancouver in ways large and small, this project considers how we arrived at the current moment, both as a gallery and as a city, asking what the past fifty years might have to tell us about the fifty years to come.

### Biographies
Justine A. Chambers is an artist and educator living and working on the unceded Coast Salish territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Her movement based practice considers how choreography can be an empathic practice rooted in collaborative creation, close observation, and the body as a site of a cumulative embodied archive. Privileging what is felt over what is seen, she works with dances that are already there – the choreographies present in the everyday. Her work has been hosted by galleries, theatres and festivals locally, nationally and internationally. She is Max Tyler-Hite’s mother.

Vanessa Kwan is an artist, producer, and curator with a focus on collaborative, site-specific and cross-disciplinary practices. They are currently Director + Curator, Gallery and Exhibitions at Emily Carr University on unceded Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territories (Vancouver, Canada). They have worked in artistic leadership roles since 2003, contributing to organizations such as grunt gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery, Other Sights for Artists’ Projects, Access Gallery, Powell Street Festival and Out On Screen. They regularly write, speak and publish on art and culture, and since 2017 have been producing residency projects across the Pacific Rim (Vancouver, Seoul, Melbourne and Sydney) exploring artist-led creative exchange.

### Biography
Harsha Walia is a Punjabi Sikh writer and organizer who has been an unpaid organizer in migrant justice, anti-capitalist, feminist, abolitionist, and anti-colonial movements for the past two decades, including through grassroots collectives such as No One Is Illegal, Defenders of the Land, and Anti-Capitalist Convergence. Her day gig is in an anti-violence service provider organization supporting survivors of gender-based violence. She is the award-winning author of Border and Rule: Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism (2021) and Undoing Border Imperialism (2013), and co-author of Never Home: Legislating Discrimination in Canadian Immigration as well as Red Women Rising: Indigenous Women Survivors in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

The history of Vancouver shapes the future of Vancouver. First called Granville, but popularly known as Gastown, then officially Vancouver, this city has a significant history, especially from the perspective of the Squamish People who have called this area home for thousands of years. Join Indigenous community leader Khelsilem from the Squamish Nation with transdisciplinary artist and facilitator Vanessa Richards in a fireside chat to reflect on the stories of Vancouver’s history, including legendary people and places. Khelsilem will share stories handed down or researched by them over the years in a reflection of what history means for the future of Vancouver.

### Biography
Khelsilem is a prominent Indigenous leader and current Chairperson of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). First elected to Council in 2017, Chairperson Khelsilem was an official Spokesperson and active in leading work on various projects and initiatives, including developing an affordable housing not-for-profit that is building 1,000 units of subsidized affordable homes and the 6,000-market apartment development at his Nation’s Sen̓áḵw lands, the largest Indigenous housing development in Canadian history. Chairperson Khelsilem’s lifelong work has focused on progressive social change, including climate justice, social democracy and gender equity. Chairperson Khelsilem brought this passion for change when he became leader of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) in 2021. Chairperson Khelsilem has been a strong advocate for democratic reform, good governance, and policy change that addresses the material needs & conditions of his people.

[Vanessa Richards](www.vanessarichards.com) works as a transdisciplinary artist and facilitator. She brings this practice to her work in education, social enterprise, and culture moving in solidarity towards a just, joyful and liberated life for a right-relationship with each other and the living Earth.

Inspired by CAG’s current exhibition *Lotus L. Kang: In Cascades*, participants will learn how to make lumen prints through a cameraless process with photo-sensitive materials. Throughout the course of the session, participants will use their body, shadows and light in and around the gallery to capture passages of time and place.

### Biography
Sidney Gordon (they/them) is a queer artist and cultural worker, born and raised on Treaty 4 territory. They hold a BMA in Film + Screen Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in so-called “Vancouver”, where they have lived and worked since 2018. The main focus of their film work is creating experiential embodiment, often portraying and deriving from personal subconscious experiences, while their cameraless photographic practice focuses on questioning authorship through ecological co-creation. They are co-founder and curator of XINEMA, a local experimental film series and a member of the artist run space and collective Liquidation World.

Alongside Lotus L. Kang's exhibition *In Cascades*, we are pleased to welcome Astrida Neimanis to deliver a talk titled "Holdfast (Learning Feeling)."

In a time of extinction and climate catastrophe, how are we to feel? Feeling intensifies, but also wavers. Feeling’s temporal container pulses, its membrane now more porous: the past seeps in, the future jumps the gun. Feeling anything swims in a feeling for what once was, and is burdened by a feeling for what will or will not remain tomorrow. Meditating on various instances of multispecies contact, this talk examines the curious relationships between language and feeling, presence and absence, solid ground and untethered at sea.

### Biography
Astrida Neimanis writes at the intersection of feminism and environmental change, with a focus on weather, water, and bodies. Often in collaboration with artists, scientists, poets, and various communities, their current projects explore the biodiversity of gender and how climate change feels. They currently live and work on unceded syilx territories, where they are Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Feminist Environmental Humanities at UBC Okanagan, and Director of the FEELed Lab.

### Biography
Coco Zhou is a writer and cultural worker living on the unceded territories of Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. She comes to these lands via Shenzhen, China. The affective intensity of being located in broader historical patterns, and the ellipses, gap, and singularities within their lines of continuity, compel much of her thinking and writing. She was awarded the Canadian Art editorial residency in 2021 and holds an MA in Decorative Arts, Design History and Material Culture from Bard Graduate Center.

Inspired by CAG’s current exhibition *Lotus L. Kang: In Cascades*, attendees will be introduced to the casting technique known as bas-relief. Throughout this workshop, Kyla will guide participants in working with a range of botanicals and vegetables to create a “still life” composition. By embedding these organic materials into clay, each participant will craft their own unique plaster cast tile. Alongside learning about bas-relief casting, participants will also get the opportunity to be introduced to a variety of other casting methods.

### Biography
Kyla Gilbert is a visual artist based out of Vancouver BC on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She graduated with a BFA in performance from Concordia University in 2017 and spent the two subsequent years touring as a puppeteer with DJ Kid Koala. Her current practice revolves around intuitive encounters with materials. As a former puppeteer and performer, she approaches her process as a site for improvisation that results in the creation of objects full of discrepancy, juxtaposition, awkwardness, and joy. Kyla completed her MFA in Studio Art from Emily Carr University in spring of 2022.

### Biography
Rafael Zen (he/they) is a queer Latinx media artist and performer working mostly through video and sound installation, spoken poetry/theory, interdisciplinary media, art education, and activist storytelling. In the past ten years, Zen has experimented with commissioned artistic projects, curated exhibitions and publications, owned an independent art school and publisher, and taught in academic/independent educational spaces. They hold a Master’s degree in Contemporary Artistic Processes researching political counterattacks through poetic/political processes and is currently pursuing a degree in New Media + Sound Art at Emily Carr University. They also work as a curator and arts coordinator at Massy Arts Gallery.

Nilh kwens Latashkinem kweshamen aka Robert Williams tina chen tla Humulchestn Uxwumixw ti Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Temixw. My ancestral name is Latashkinem aka Robert Williams and I currently reside in the village of Humulchestn in the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Territory. I worked with our tribe as a cultural worker providing support to our youth with the guidance of our elders and chiefs. My new career as a digital artist and storyteller has allowed me to adapt my knowledge and experience in a modern context. My future goals are to write new stories for children and create art inspired by the legends and history of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh. En wenaxten skwalewen. I have love for our people.

Inspired by CAG’s current exhibition *Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill: M******, participants will learn to manipulate film celluloid using paint, ink and scratching to create moving-image paintings. Throughout this workshop, Paige will introduce cameraless filmmaking techniques exploring how to translate tactile gestures of paint brushes and pens into movement. Each participant will create a short segment, and the group's work will be stitched together and screened at the end of the workshop.

### Biography
Paige Smith (she/her) is an experimental filmmaker and visual artist whose artwork collapses distinctions like fiction/reality or nature/culture to fabulate new ontological understandings of ourselves and the places where we exist. She draws attention towards the characteristics, histories, and meanings of the places where her artwork is created and experienced, investigating how viewer perception is informed by its surrounding context. Smith attended Simon Fraser University to study film and visual art, and has recently exhibited with Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society, Massy Arts Society, Audain Gallery, Vines Art Festival and VIVO Media Arts Centre.

Each month an artist proposes text for our collective reading pleasure, culminating in a virtual hangout where the artist leads a wide-ranging discussion grounded in their chosen reading material. 

In July, CAG Reads will be hosted by Audie Murray. ### Biography
Audie Murray is a visual artist, dreamer, and skin-stitcher. Her practice is informed by the process of making and visiting to explore themes of contemporary culture, embodied experiences and lived dualities. These modes of working assist with the recentering of our collective connection to bodies, ancestral knowledge systems, and relationality. She has exhibited widely, including at Remai Modern, Saskatoon; The Vancouver Art Gallery; Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow; and the Anchorage Museum. Murray is Cree-Métis from the Lebret and Meadow Lake communities located on Treaty 4 & 6 territories and is currently based in Oskana kâ-asastêki (Regina, Saskatchewan). ### Biography
Whess Harman is a member of the Carrier Wit’at Nation, a nation amalgamated by the federal government under the Lake Babine Nation. He doesn’t like cops and believes in land sovereignty for Indigenous peoples all across the globe. In his arts practice he works primarily in drawing, text and textiles. As the curator at grunt gallery and occasional editor for a mish-mash of publications, he prioritizes emerging queer and BIPOC cultural workers and artists. Whess looks to the arts as one of many tools in fighting oppressive forces and can be a little fucking rude about it, when the occasion calls.

### Biographies
Chandra Melting Tallow is an interdisciplinary artist, experimental filmmaker, writer and music producer of European and Blackfoot ancestry from the Siksika Nation. Their practice confronts the ghosts of intergenerational trauma and their relationship to the body through the lens of physical disability, using humour and surrealism to subvert oppressive power structures. They lead the solo music project Mourning Coup, a cult classic in the Indigenous lexicon of underground music. Their work includes experimental film, textile-based installation, sound and performance, and it has been exhibited throughout North America.

Alexander Miranda is a contemporary Payómkawichum artist from Southern California. Miranda pushes the boundaries of Native American art through a multitude of art forms and media with a focus on songwriting, music composition, photography, painting, and poetry. His portfolio honours and celebrates the power, resilience and beauty of Indigenous people, incontestably aligning his work with world-wide Indigenous resurgence. He is a current member of the band Underpass and has been commissioned by Julian Klincewicz and Virgil Abloh. He most recently scored the documentary *Manzanar Diverted: When Water Becomes Dust*.

A soloist musician, composer and vibrant collaborator, Laura Ortman (White Mountain Apache) creates across multiple platforms, including recorded albums, live performances, and filmic and artistic soundtracks. She has collaborated with artists such as Tony Conrad, Jock Soto, Raven Chacon, Nanobah Becker, Okkyung Lee, Martin Bisi, Jeffrey Gibson, Caroline Monnet, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Demian DinéYazhi, New Red Order, and In Defense of Memory. An inquisitive and exquisite violinist, Ortman is versed in Apache violin, piano, electric guitar, keyboards, and amplified violin, often sings through a megaphone, and is a producer of capacious field recordings. She has performed at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim, the New Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal; the Venice Biennale; imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, the Toronto Biennial; and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, among countless established and DIY venues in the US, Canada, and Europe.

Open Studio is a monthly program for young visitors and families inspired by contemporary art practices and CAG’s current exhibitions. In June, we invite you to join us for a hands-on workshop led by exhibiting artist Sesemiya.

Inspired by her current exhibition *s7ulh waḵáy̓stn iy ta stamsh cht* (Our Weapons and Warriors), participants will learn about ancient weapons and tools of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh stamsh (warrior). Sesemiya will guide the group in making a fundamental and versatile tool, cedar rope, as well as talk about the importance of protecting our wild spaces and waterways.

### Biography
Sesemiya (Tracy Williams) is a knowledge seeker, dreamer, water protector, land defender, lover, mother, auntie, weaver, and cultural practitioner. Her rich relationships with plants, animals, land, and water have taken her to the tops of mountains, the bottom of the ocean, fields of fireweed, and occasionally art galleries. Her work as an artist and educator is deeply invested in cultural revitalization and she has developed numerous programmes for connecting Sḵwx̱wú7mesh youth to traditional hand technologies and knowledge for living off the land. Her work has appeared in exhibitions such as *lineages and land bases*, Vancouver Art Gallery (2020); *Intangible: Memory and Innovation in Coast Salish Art*, Bill Reid Gallery (2017); and *N. Vancouver*, The Polygon Gallery (2017). In 2021, a commissioned work of Sesemiya’s was included in the Vancouver Art Gallery’s presentation of Yoko Ono’s *Water Event*. Sesemiya is a proud member of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation.

### Biography
Karice Mitchell (b. 1996, Toronto) is a photo-based installation artist whose practice uses found imagery and digital manipulation to engage with issues relating to the representation of the Black female body in pornography and popular culture. Her work seeks to re-contextualize pre-existing images to reimagine the possibilities for Black womanhood and sexuality detached from the white gaze and patriarchy. She received her BFA at York University in 2019 and her MFA at the University of Waterloo in June 2021. She resides on the unceded and traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. She is a full-time lecturer at the University of British Columbia Vancouver campus.

### Biographies
Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill is an artist and writer. Her practice explores the history of found materials to enquire into concepts of land, property, and economy. Recent exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the 59th Venice Biennale; Le Magasin CNAC, Grenoble; the Vancouver Art Gallery; the College Art Galleries at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon; and Gallery TPW, Toronto. She is a member of BUSH gallery, an Indigenous artist collective that seeks to challenge Eurocentric art models, and to centre the land and Indigenous epistemologies. Hill is Cree and English, with maternal roots in the Michel Band and Papaschase. She lives on the unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm and səlilwətaɬ Nations.

Dionne Lee is a visual artist working in photography, collage, sculpture, and video. Her work explores power and personal history in relation to the American landscape, and interrogates historical narratives that exist within photographic representations of land and place. Lee received her MFA from California College of the Arts. She has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Feria Material, Mexico City; New Orleans Museum of Art; Aperture Foundation, New York; Silver Eye Center for Photography, Pittsburgh; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; and the San Francisco Arts Commission, among others. Lee was a 2022 Artist-in-Residence at the Chinati Foundation and is a 2021–2023 Artist-in-Residence with Unseen California.

Lorna Brown is a Vancouver-based visual artist, curator, writer and editor. Brown is a founding member of Other Sights for Artists’ Projects, and is an ongoing member of the Other Sights Producer team. She was the Director/Curator of Artspeak Gallery from 1999 to 2004, an artist-run centre focusing on the relationship between visual art and writing. Between 2015 and 2022, she was Acting Director/Curator at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia, curating exhibition series such as *Beginning With the Seventies* that explored the relationship between art, archives and activism. Brown has exhibited her work internationally since 1984, and has taught at Simon Fraser University and Emily Carr University of Art and Design where she received an honorary doctorate of letters in 2015. Awards include the Vancouver Institute for the Visual Arts Award (1996) and the Canada Council Paris Studio Award (2000). Her work is in the collections of the Belkin, SFU Galleries, the National Gallery of Canada, the BC Arts Council, the Surrey Art Gallery and the Canada Council Art Bank.

Inspired by CAG’s current exhibition *Kathy Slade: As the sun disappears and the shadows descend from the mountaintop*, Kit will guide participants in making a collagraph print, a printmaking technique made from a collage of various materials glued onto a plate. Through a playful exploration of shapes, lines and textures on paper, this workshop will investigate both practices of repetition and imitation.

### Biography
Kit Liu is a Canadian visual artist with an interest in the nature of being mortal. Working with graphite, paint, copper etching and relief printmaking, Kit pulls impressions to reconcile the duality of life and death, and to explore the magnitude of human care and grief. Recent print media exhibitions include *SAVE IT IN A PILE* (2021), *MATRIX* (2021), and *You are small and you are beautiful.* (2022) at the Michael O'Brian Exhibition Commons at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

### Biography
Rebecca Bair is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver — the traditional and ancestral territories of the Coast Salish peoples. Her research aims to explore the possibilities of specific representation and of identity through abstraction and non-figuration. Bair uses multimedia approaches and Sun collaborations to illustrate her exploration of identity and intersectionality, through the lens of her own experience as a Black Woman on Turtle Island. Her artistic, professional and educational goals revolve around common themes of celebrating Black plurality, as well as enabling interpersonal and intercultural care, and her work acts as a vehicle through which the complexities of history and identity can be uncovered, redefined and expressed.

### Biography
Silas Ng is an emerging multi-disciplinary artist based on the unceded territories of Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. He holds his Bachelor of Fine Art in Photography from Emily Carr University. He is currently studying in the School of Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University for his Master of Fine Arts and Master of Arts in Contemporary Arts. His emerging research of deaf studies has focused on media and multisensory learning from the sense of sight and touch to reveal how audiovisual films shape his understanding of sound in immersive experience.

Inspired by CAG’s current exhibition *Kathy Slade: As the sun disappears and the shadows descend from the mountaintop*, Sena will guide the group in a series of experimental portrait drawing exercises. Influenced by the idea of scrying — which is to look into a surface object to gain insight about oneself or one's future — these drawings will be cut into strips, then woven back together with various other papers, plastics, and fibres.

### Biography
Sena Cleave is an artist who explores the ways images and texts fabricate ideas of femininity, language, and originality or authorship. Their practice involves weaving, video, and photographic image making, as well as quoting and recombining found text. By bringing together materials found in research and in everyday life, Cleave points to the slippage that occurs when an idea is translated between mediums, languages, or cultural and historical contexts. The found materials become recontextualized among one another, and together they generate something that resembles a whole — one that is jumbled and misbehaving.

### Biography
Brady Cranfield is a Vancouver-based sound and visual artist, musician, and writer. He holds a MA in Communications and a MFA from Simon Fraser University. He is the founder and co-organizer (in collaboration with the artist Kathy Slade) of the ongoing public art project The Music Appreciation Society, and he has frequently collaborated with artist Jamie Hilder. He is currently also a member of the improv/electronic/jazz trio Alfred Jarry.

### Biography
Allison Grimaldi Donahue (b. 1984, Middletown, CT) works in text and performance exploring modes in which language and text can move between individual and collective experience. She often employs participatory writing methods to build improvised communities of writers and translators, investigating the ways in which language is useful and useless, meaningful and a receptacle. She is author of *Body to Mineral* (Publication Studio Vancouver 2016) and On Endings (Delere Press 2019) and translator of *Blown Away* by vito m. bonito (Fomite 2021) and *Self-portrait* by Carla Lonzi (Divided 2021). She has given recent performances at Short Theatre, Almanac Turin, MACRO, MAMbo, Fondazione Giuliani and Kunsthalle Bern. In 2022 together with Caterina Moltenti at MAMbo Bologna she curated a retrospective of the work of concrete and sound poet Giulia Niccolai. She is currently working on a project at Sonnenstube Lugano around the work of Swiss lesbian feminist author Alice Ceresa. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and earned her PhD in 2021 from the European Graduate School under the supervision of Catherine Malabou. She lives in Bologna, Italy.

This winter, CAG is pleased to host in its lobby a curatorial project by The Couch, entitled *Hometown II*. On view from February 9 to March 3, 2023, *Hometown II* features the work of A. Branch, Danielle Bobier, Kyla Dooley, Hannah Dubois, Ysabel Gana, and Pierre Kaufman.

Organized by Debbie C. and Sena Cleave, The Couch is a mobile art space that draws on the homemaking practices of carpenter ants to platform the work of emerging artists. Consisting of a couch and a coffee table, The Couch hosts gatherings that merge art and daily life, “infesting” galleries, living rooms, lobbies, outdoor public spaces and more. Art objects are exhibited on the table, and guests are invited to sit on the couch. 

For *Hometown II*, The Couch's organizers issued a call for art objects inspired by their research into artist Kim Beom’s book “Hometown,” which they encountered in CAG’s Abraham Rogatnick Library:

> First published in 1998 in Seoul, Korea, "Hometown" is about Ungyeri, a town that does not exist. Artist Kim Beom invites readers to learn about Ungyeri in order to claim it as their hometown, explaining that because the town does not exist, no one can contest these claims. The book acts as a guide for those who do not know their hometown or do not wish to reveal it though they have one. And “even if you do not have such a need,” Kim writes, “some of you may want to imagine a small, nameless mountain village or wish to have stories about places other than those that everybody recognizes by name or large, stifling cities.” He instructs readers on how to take on the qualities of a former Ungyeri resident, including details about the town’s location, customs, economics, and history.

> In the preface to the English edition of the book, Kim adds “it would indeed have been ideal if I could have created a hometown for each of you somewhere in your own country that has an environment similar to those of other people’s hometowns.” We take this as an invitation to continue Kim’s work of imagining space and place, intervening in existing infrastructures, and playing with narratives of belonging. We invite submissions by emerging artists that explore these ideas or otherwise respond to Kim’s "Hometown."

This project is presented as part of The Couch’s CAG Prize Residency, awarded yearly to an outstanding graduating BFA student (or students) in SFU’s Visual Art Program. The Couch (Debbie C. & Sena Cleave) were the recipients of the 2022 CAG Prize.

### Biography
The Couch is a mobile art space that draws on the homemaking practices of carpenter ants to platform the work of emerging artists. Carpenter ants chew faults into human infrastructures to build their own homes, but an infestation alone cannot demolish a building. Instead, the ants uncover the foundations by disturbing surface elements like window sills or baseboards. When The Couch is installed within a gallery, it carves out space for artists that the institution did not invite, thus infesting the gallery.

The Couch: Hometown II

CAG Prize Residency

### Biography
Lorna Brown is a Vancouver-based visual artist, curator, writer and editor. Brown is a founding member of Other Sights for Artists’ Projects, and is an ongoing member of the Other Sights Producer team. She was the Director/Curator of Artspeak Gallery from 1999 to 2004, an artist-run centre focusing on the relationship between visual art and writing. Between 2015 and 2022, she was Acting Director/Curator at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia, curating exhibition series such as *Beginning With the Seventies* that explored the relationship between art, archives and activism. Brown has exhibited her work internationally since 1984, and has taught at Simon Fraser University and Emily Carr University of Art and Design where she received an honorary doctorate of letters in 2015. Awards include the Vancouver Institute for the Visual Arts Award (1996) and the Canada Council Paris Studio Award (2000). Her work is in the collections of the Belkin, SFU Galleries, the National Gallery of Canada, the BC Arts Council, the Surrey Art Gallery and the Canada Council Art Bank.
