Open Studio is a monthly program for young visitors and families inspired by contemporary art practices and CAG’s current exhibitions. In April, we invite you to join us for an art-making workshop led by artist Kit Liu. 

Inspired by CAG’s current exhibition *Kathy Slade: As the sun disappears and the shadows descend from the mountaintop*, Kit will guide participants in making a collagraph print, a printmaking technique made from a collage of various materials glued onto a plate. Through a playful exploration of shapes, lines and textures on paper, this workshop will investigate both practices of repetition and imitation.

### Biography
Kit Liu is a Canadian visual artist with an interest in the nature of being mortal. Working with graphite, paint, copper etching and relief printmaking, Kit pulls impressions to reconcile the duality of life and death, and to explore the magnitude of human care and grief. Recent print media exhibitions include *SAVE IT IN A PILE* (2021), *MATRIX* (2021), and *You are small and you are beautiful.* (2022) at the Michael O'Brian Exhibition Commons at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

Contemporary Art Practices: Visual Arts Summer Intensive is a three-week scholarship program for young artists aged 15 to 19. Hosted by [Arts Umbrella](https://www.artsumbrella.com/programs/art/scholarship-programs/visual-art-summer-intensive/) and the Contemporary Art Gallery, the course supports participants in developing an art practice that critically engages with the world around them and exposes them to new and creative approaches to artmaking.

Led by facilitating artist Hyung-Min Yoon, the students were exposed to various methodologies and were engaged in a series of workshops, discussions, and critiques that introduced them to contemporary art practices. They explored linocut printmaking and bookbinding with storyteller and printmaker Marlene Yuen and experimented with digital image-making through Photoshop with contemporary visual artist Evan Lee. Students were also led through a beading and embroidery workshop with Anishinaabe mixed media painter and installation artist Charlene Vickers.

This year, the students were challenged to look into themselves and their generation for the final project. *Intertwined*, a title chosen to express the closely involved relationship between their identity and the society that formed it, showcases the result of the individual artworks of the 2022 Contemporary Art Practices cohort.

Contemporary Art Practices: Visual Arts Summer Intensive is a three-week scholarship program for young artists aged 15 to 19. Hosted by [Arts Umbrella](https://www.artsumbrella.com/programs/art/scholarship-programs/visual-art-summer-intensive/) and the Contemporary Art Gallery, the course supports participants in developing an art practice that critically engages with the world around them.

In the midst of both a second year of the COVID-19 pandemic and human-caused climate change continuing to have observable effects on our daily lives, this year’s students were invited to explore relationships between nature and culture. Taking inspiration from contemporary art and artists investigating similar concerns, the students worked with guest artists Nicole Kelly Westman and Khan Lee over two workshops, providing them with opportunities to deepen their thematic explorations while expanding their engagement with professional arts contexts. Human Nature showcases the results, bringing together the projects of the program’s 2021 cohort across three platforms: here online; in an exhibition at Arts Umbrella; and in printed matter available for free in CAG’s bookshop and at Arts Umbrella.

Hosted by [Arts Umbrella](https://www.artsumbrella.com/programs/art/scholarship-programs/visual-art-summer-intensive/) and the Contemporary Art Gallery, the course supports participants in developing an art practice that critically engages with the world around them.

*In this space* showcases the individual artworks of the program’s 2020 cohort, both here online and as printed matter available for free at either at CAG’s bookshop or Arts Umbrella. Rather than gathering in a communal studio environment, participants worked this year via video discussions from home, exploring with guest artists the broad theme of art and everyday life. Responding collectively to the current global state under the COVID-19 pandemic, the participants’ final projects reflect on the familiar environments—physical and otherwise—we often take for granted.
