Kathy Slade

Co-produced by the Contemporary Art Gallery and the Kunstverein Braunschweig, this extensive exhibition brings together the work of three Canadian artists—Nadia Belerique, Jeneen Frei Njootli and Kathy Slade—at the Kunsteverein’s historic Villa Salve Hospes.

### Biographies
Nadia Belerique received her MFA from the University of Guelph. Recent solo exhibitions include *There’s A Hole In The Bucket, Daniel Faria Gallery* (2019); *On Sleep Stones*, Grazer Kunstverein (2018) and *The Weather Channel*, Oakville Galleries (2018). Her work has been included in La Biennale de Montreal (2016) curated by Philippe Pirote and the Gwangju Biennale (2016), curated by Maria Lind. It has been exhibited internationally at venues such as Tensta Konsthall, Spånga; Kunsthalle, Wein; Vie d’ange, Montreal; The Power Plant, Toronto; and Downs and Ross, New York. Belerique was long-listed for the 2017 Sobey Art Award and has completed residencies at Walk & Talk, The Azores and Fogo Island Arts, among others. Forthcoming exhibitions include: Kunstverein Braunschweig (2020), Toronto Biennial (2021) and Fogo Island Arts (2022). She lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

Jeneen Frei Njootli is a 2SQ Vuntut Gwitchin artist whose award-winning practice takes the forms of performance, sound, textiles, images, collaboration, workshops, and feral scholarship. Having exhibited and performed internationally, they are now living in the ancestral, unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples while teaching at the University of British Columbia. Concerned with Indigenous politics and aesthetics, Frei Njootli is currently welding, sewing, writing, and organizing. Kathy Slade is an artist, writer, curator, and editor/publisher. She works across mediums and has produced textile works, prints, sculpture, film, video, performance, music projects, and publications. Slade’s work draws upon sources ranging from cult films and punk rock music to literary classics, art history, feminism, technology, and labour histories. Her recent solo exhibitions include: *A Dream and a Drive* (in collaboration with Amber Frid-Jimenez), Monica Reyes Gallery, Vancouver (2019); *This is a Chord. This is Another.*, Surrey Art Gallery (2018) and *Blue Monday*, 4COSE, London (2017). Slade’s work has been included in group exhibitions such as: *Protest and Design*, Dublin Art Book Fair (2020); Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Dublin (2020); *It’s Never Too Late to Speculate*, Fluc, Vienna (2019); and *Beginning with the Seventies: GLUT*, Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery Vancouver (2018). Slade curated *Fiona Banner aka The Vanity Press* at the Libby Leshgold Gallery, Vancouver (2019) and was Curator of the 2019 Vancouver Art Book Fair.

Slade’s solo exhibitions include *Wherever You Go*, Monica Reyes Gallery, Vancouver (2020); *This is a Chord. This is Another.*, Surrey Art Gallery (2018); and *Blue Monday*, 4COSE, London (2017). Her work has recently been included in group exhibitions at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Dublin; Kunstverein Braunschweig; Fluc, Vienna; and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Vancouver. In 2009, Slade was awarded the VIVA Award from the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation for the Visual Arts. She currently teaches at the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University.

Lisa Robertson (b. 1961, Toronto) is a Canadian poet and essayist. She was a longtime resident of Vancouver, where in the early ’90s she began writing, publishing and collaborating in a community of artists and poets that included Artspeak Gallery and The Kootenay School of Writing. She has continued these activities for 30 years, publishing books, leaflets and posters, translating poetry and linguistics from French, lecturing and teaching internationally, and continuing her ongoing study into the political constitution of lyric voice. In 2017 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Letters by Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and in 2018, the Foundation for the Contemporary Arts in NY awarded her the inaugural CD Wright Award in Poetry. She has taught at Cambridge University, Princeton, UC Berkeley, California College of the Arts, Piet Zwart Institute, Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, and American University of Paris, as well as holding research and residency positions at institutions across Canada, the US and Europe. Her recent books include the novel *The Baudelaire Fractal* and the poetry collection *Boat*, both from Coach House Books, as well as *Anemones*, a translation and study of Simone Weil published by If I Can’t Dance, in Amsterdam. She lives in France.

Opening Reception

For over three decades, Kathy Slade has produced conceptually driven work that engages techniques of copying, repetition and reenactment, often coalescing in materially sumptuous objects. In her wide-ranging interdisciplinary practice, Slade inhabits sources from literature, art history, philosophy, and popular culture, weaving her references into absurd and frequently playful loops and voids.
 
At the Contemporary Art Gallery, Slade presents *As the sun disappears and the shadows descend from the mountaintop*, a new body of work rooted in a research trip to Sils Maria, Switzerland, where Friedrich Nietzsche spent the majority of his summers during the decade he wrote his most enduring works. There, Slade retraced the philosopher’s steps along the shore of Lake Silvaplana, where upon encountering a large, pyramid-shaped rock he arrived at what he called “my truly abyssal thought”: eternal recurrence, “the unconditional and infinitely repeated circulation of all things.” In the exhibition, Slade reimagines Nietzsche’s encounter in two depictions: an enormous tapestry representing the rock to scale, and a series of graphite rubbings that maps the entirety of the rock’s surface over twenty monochromes.
